Worth is not lessened by the loss of cognition.  Think about that……It is not the responsibility of persons with failing memory and understanding to make others around them respect their humanity.  It is our role to meet them where they are and revere their significance.

Open your eyes to see more than the outside of me.  I am a father, wife, brother, grandmother or cherished friend.  I have loved and been loved.   I am cherished by those close to me.  I cannot speak but I can feel you near.  Look into my eyes and remember who I am.  Consider how you would feel if you woke up each day in new surroundings.  I am insecure, confused and lost.  Do you remember how you felt when you were small and let go of your mother’s hand to peer in the store window when moments later, you realized you were all alone?  You gaze around with panic and fear searching for familiarity in the faces of those near.   You are lost, alone, scared.  So am I, please see me and take my hand.

This world is so careful to accept all kinds, careful to embrace diversity and respect those who are different.  Please include the elderly with this embrace.  “Make Your Mark” for those affected by this disease by offering compassion and concern for them and their selfless caregivers.  Dementia may destroy one’s cognition but the heart and soul are still thriving.  Look through their exterior and touch their spirit.  For more information about Dementia, contact your local Area Agency on Aging at 205-333-2990.
