Senior Activity Centers “Make a Mark” on Social Isolation

Many persons 60 and better attend Senior Activity Centers for connection, purpose and nutrition. Due to the world’s current situation with COVID 19, seniors are not able to interact on site at the 22 centers throughout West Alabama. But for those who take part in their local senior center, they have been able to stay in touch due to the dedication of the staff at their senior activity center.

Tina Morgan is the Pickens County Aging Contractor and coordinates center operations at four senior centers in her county. The Area Agency on Aging provided shelf stable meals over the past 8 weeks to replace hot meals, after social distancing made normal operations cease. She and her volunteers delivered shelf stable meals to participants. Ms. Morgan commented, “Many participants are single and live alone and when we delivered the shelf stable meals every two weeks, they were relieved to have the extra food on hand. Many were scared to go shop for groceries so this was a way to keep them safe as well as provide reliable nutrition.” In addition, all participants are called weekly and checked on which gave the seniors assurance that they are not alone.

May is Older American Month, the theme this year is “Make Your Mark” and the social impact a Senior Activity Center provides, certainly makes a MARK in the lives of those who participate. Anyone age 60 and older, living in West Alabama is invited to participate at their local senior activity center. Contact the Area Agency on Aging at 205-333-2990 for more information.
