Pancakes for a Purpose

Hosted by New Beacon Hospice & Brent Senior Center.
While most everyone knows about the Senior Center and all the activities going on there, they are not aware of the home delivery meal program provided by the Senior Center. There are many senior adults, while they can still live in their home, that are basically bound to their home for various reasons. This program is critical to ensuring that they are provided a good, hot, nutritious lunch five days a week. Cynthia Winegard with the Senior Center and Paige Landry with New Beacon Hospice see first hand the need for this program. Cynthia, living in the community knows the importance of developing a relationship with the clients that attend the senior center. This same concept applies even more to those that are home bound and are unable to come to the center.
Our goal for this breakfast is to:
1) Raise awareness of the program.
2) Show the importance of the program.
3) Raise funds to support the program.
We will be seeking local businesses and community members for sponsorships. As a sponsor, you have the opportunity to show your passion and support for the senior adults of our community. Tickets for the all you can eat pancake breakfast are $7 each.
There will be information available at the breakfast about the home bound meal delivery program and the services New Beacon offers to our community. You will have the opportunity to eat in before work or take your breakfast to work with you.
The "Pancakes For a Purpose" will be held on Friday, May 18th from 6 am - 10 am at the Brent Senior Center. If you are interested in being a sponsor, purchasing a ticket for the breakfast or making a donation contact Cynthia @ 205-926-3968 or Paige @ 205-267-9512.

Registration Open for UA LIFT Spring 2018 Classes

A SCSEP participant receives assistance through the LIFT Program to learn about using a computer and other technology.

Registration is now open for the University of Alabama's Learning Initiative and Financial (LIFT) Training Program. LIFT is a joint initiative of The Culverhouse College of Commerce Dean's Office and The Culverhouse School of Accountancy.

This program is designed to reach out to the Tuscaloosa and West Alabama communities and use University resources, both financial and human capital, to improve the job skills of the adult and teen populations.

The program provides free classes for anyone in the community who would otherwise not have access to such courses and education because of lack of financial resources or other obstacles.   A secondary goal is to provide support to the small business community and local entrepreneurs.

The training focuses on improving the job marketability of the participants by training them in software including Quickbooks, Excel, Word, and Powerpoint.   Additional courses include Professional Development, Business Communication, GED Exam Preparation, and Reading Literacy.  Trained University undergraduate and graduate students serve as tutors and guides and provide individual attention. Students are supervised and trained by staff and faculty.
